ANIMA

At eleven fifty-nine, we’re crowded around the border. The three of us are hidden in the shadows before Cassandra makes it out to us. She clears the trees, and I see her blonde hair illuminated by the moon.

“Ready?” she asks, cheeks pink from running.

“Let’s get this over with. I don’t want to be here for another minute longer than we have to,” Caedis says.

“What’s the matter, Death? Afraid of some witches?” Torque teases.

Caedis starts in his direction, but I get in the middle. “Now isn’t the time. Get along or wait in the car. I don’t have time for this.”

I press my hand to the ward, and it bevels out. My other hand reaches out to clasps Torque’s. Caedis rests his on my shoulder as we walk through the barrier.

At first, I think we’re trapped. The ward sticks to my skin before it finds something inside of me and gives. We’re released on the other side with a pop, and the guys let go.

“That was horrible,” Caedis says. “Like my guts were being rearranged.”

“She coded the ward for demons. It’s why Anima can get through. She has other blood inside of her that allows her to bring you over.” Cassandra explains.

I look at the watch I strapped on my wrist before we left. 12:02 AM. We have eight minutes to get out of sight.

“This way,” Cassandra says. She’s leading us through the back section of the citadel. This must be how they got me out, through the safety tunnels that lead to the cells.

“I’ll stay back to keep watch. Anima, you know the way,” Cassandra says, using her magic to open the hatch on the door. It swings open, and Caedis catches it before it hits the wall.

I motion for the guys to follow me. The hall is dark, but I throw up a light orb and continue down. I’m quick on my feet, using a blur spell to propel me further down the pathway. The urgency to get to Shelley is slowly eating away at me.

Stopping at the junction between the stairs and the opening to the cells, I peer around the corner. Two witches stand at the stairs. Both are dressed in battle leathers, their swords strapped to their backs.

I raise my hand, holding up two fingers. “Wait here,” I mouth before pulling the shadows to me.

I’m in the zone, doing what I was trained for. Being an assassin is all about stealth and precision. This will be quick for them and us.

The first witch goes down. She clutches her neck, trying to keep the blood from pouring out. By the time the second realizes her partner is dying, I’ve managed to plunge the knife into her trachea. She tries to make a sound, but nothing comes out except bubbles.

A part of me feels empty, in control, and ready to take on the world for our cause. Another part, the one that grew up here, feels a pang of regret. It’s no small thing to take a life, but after doing it for years, it’s hard to feel anything.
